Found Another Michigan Meet

Finding meets for Michigan before they offically release their schedule is like a scavenger hunt on the internet for me. But man, am I good at it!

I found another simply by remembering some of the schools they’ve swam against in past seasons.

The Wolverines will welcome the Florida Gators (Men and Women) to Ann Arbor on Friday, October 17 for a 6PM dual meet.

Really J.Lo?

Seems Mrs. Marc Anthony doesn’t get out much — or turn on her TV lately — and doesn’t realize what a big freakin’ deal the Olympics and MP’s 8 gold medal haul in Beijing is.

She went on GMA to promote the fact that she’s training for a triathlon (after giving birth to twins months ago) and was a little bit miffed that all anyone could talk about was Michael Phelps.

Lopez, who appeared on “Good Morning America” Aug. 18 to discuss her preparations for the Malibu Triathlon, was overheard saying after the segment that she “couldn’t understand why everyone is talking about that swimmer,” according to a GMA source. “She couldn’t come up with (eight-time gold-medal winner Michael) Phelps’ name, and then she yammered on about how she was the one training for a triathlon just six months after giving birth, and how that was the big story right now, not ‘the swimmer.’”

O RLY? Sounds like someone’s a little full of themselves. Dara Torres, who is older than J.Lo, was back in the pool 3 weeks after giving birth and was racing shortly thereafter. Not only that, but whilst pregnant, she was racing men. But nevermind that. We should all be oh-so-impressed that Jenny from the Block is going to compete in a triathlon next month. I’ll put that on my calendar ASAP! Sorry about that, Jenny!

I think this might be a record or something. Probably not, but I’m going to go ahead and say that it is, so there!

Once again, Michael Phelps graces the cover of Sports Illustrated. We pretty much knew this was coming after his historic gold medal haul in Beijing. Check it, yo. It’s the August 25, 2008 issue.

Michael Phelps’ 3rd SI Cover in a month. Straight pimpin’

Also, don’t look for a repeat from the Athens Games, where Mr. Phelps was front and center on the Wheaties Box. He has a deal with Kellogg’s and will be on the cover of Corn Flakes and Frosted Flakes boxes. Collector’s items, y’all.

MP’s Corn Flakes cereal box?

2008-09 Michigan Schedule Update

The Wolverine swimmers will be heading back to the grind relatively soon as classes get underway on September 2.

While the official site hasn’t released the 2008-09 schedule yet, I’ve done a little digging of my own and compiled an early list of meets. These include dual, tri, and quad meets, as well as the Big Ten and NCAA Championships. Last year, the men got to host Big Tens. This year, the women will play host for the rest of the conference.

Visit the schedule page for the list. I will add to it as more dates pop up. While I’m already committed to the Tri-meet with Ohio State and Penn State, I’m now also eye-balling that Tri-meet with Indiana and Texas. It’s not everyday the boys from Austin travel up north to compete!

The Vanderkaay clan, minus PVK, has returned to the States. But before they left they wrote one last blog post from Beijing. Read it, and all the other entries, here. A photo album will follow. That should be neat! I’ll let y’all know when it’s available for viewing. The family is try to combat jet lag right now!

The video feature that was done on Pete - and was supposed to air yesterday — can be viewed, in part, at NBCOlympics.com. (Scroll down to ‘Royal Treatment’ to watch).

Gotta love how NBC is all over things over there. I guess that comes with spending $406720967206276 for the rights to air the Games, huh?

There was another video, with a large part of Team USA present, including PVK, but they only spoke to Aaron Peirsol and Rebecca Soni, so I didn’t bother embedding it.

However, the Vanderkaay Family sent word that Pete taped a segment that will be shown at 7:30 today. My guess is that’s right before primetime coverage. Around these parts, Access Hollywood is shown right before Olympic coverage kicks in, so I’m not sure if I’ll see it or not. We’ll see!

The seemingly neverending stream of Phelps video continues with these 2 segments from NBC’s Nightly News. There will be more as he and his fam are set to visit the Today Show in a matter of hours.

Michael Phelps Covers Sports IllustratedAlso, I forgot to mention it, but MP is on the cover of the new August 18, 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated, on newsstands now. After being on the cover for the Olympic Preview Issue, which preceded this issue, it’s no surprise that he’s on the cover again. After all, he was the story of the 1st week of the Games.

Also, is it funny to anyone else that NBC already prepackaged a special edition DVD of Mike to sell after he grabbed that 8th medal? And so the merchandising machine begins!

400 medley relay team with their Beijing gold medalsMichael Phelps goes 8-for-8. With the assist from Team USA teammates Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen, and Jason Lezak, Phelps won his 8th Gold Medal in the 400 Medley Relay. It was his 7th World Record as the quartet stopped the clock in 3:29.34. Australia took the silver in 3:30.04, followed by Japan’s 3:31.18 finish.

What a week! Congrats to Mike on his historic run in Beijing, as well as the rest of the Team USA swimmers that represented us so well!

Peter Vanderkaay finished with 2 medals: a gold in the 800 Free Relay and a bronze in the 200 Free. Erik Vendt and Allison Schmitt also earned a medal from their respective 800 Free Relays. A gold for Erik and a bronze for Allison. Great job, Club Wolverine!
